Mercedes-Benz new flagship, the SLS AMG, is a throwback to the nostalgic days of the 300SL.
There is nothing nostalgic about the technology involved in this super sports car though, with its spaceframe aluminium body and 6.3 litre V8 engine, the seven speed dual clutch and transmission, and sports suspension featuring aluminium double wishbones.
Accelerating from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds, the car has a top speed of over 200mph, contributed to by the new intake system, flow optimised tubular headers made from steel, reworked camshafts and valve train and the dethrottling of its exhaust system. The high revving flexibility of the car is demonstrated by the response of the eight cylinder engine to the accelerator pedal movements. With its dual clutch transmission and seven gears, power transfer is taken care of adequately.
The car is still in its final testing stage (design and development began back in 2006) but should be ready for launch in the spring of 2010.
